Killeen, TX — In 2018, voters in Texas’ Killeen Independent School District passed bonds for the renovation and modernization of the 58-year-old Killeen High School building and for the building of a brand-new facility – Chaparral High School.

These PBK-designed and American Constructors-built schools both utilized Won-Door’s industry-leading, accordion folding fire & security doors, SteelGuard.

Completed in summer 2022, Chaparral High School was the first new high school built in KISD in more than 20 years. The 432,000 sq ft facility has the capacity to accommodate over 3,000 students. Two classroom wings and two more extracurricular wings flow from the central commons and media center areas. Ten SteelGuard doors provide both required fire protection and secure and compartmentalized corridors and stairways during hostile events.

It remains our top priority from day one, to ensure our students, staff and community are safe and healthy…added things you’ll see are automatic safety doors, so there’s a door locking system.

Taina Maya, Director of Communications for KISD

Dedicated in February 2023, Killeen High School was rebuilt with significant renovations to CTE classrooms, auditorium, main gym and library, in addition to a two-story academic wing with 78 classrooms, among a host of other modernizations. The new facility will accommodate 2,357 students and dozens of faculty and staff. SteelGuard doors were strategically placed in 12 locations throughout the campus to meet stringent fire code requirements and to secure the modern facility.

Architectural details such as wide corridors and open stairways allow for brightly lit spaces and the free movement of traffic. These elements are also most conducive to a productive learning environment, but they do present some safety and security challenges. That’s where the fast-moving, automatic SteelGuard doors from Won-Door come in.

Director of Communications for KISD, Taina Maya explains, “It remains our top priority from day one, to ensure our students, staff and community are safe and healthy…added things you’ll see are automatic safety doors, so there’s a door locking system.”

Killeen and Chaparral High Schools are just two of the many examples of how Won-Door SteelGuard™ doors are working to allow for the greatest design flexibility with the safety and security that are paramount in today’s modern education spaces.
